ABOUT JASAAN
Jasaan is a second-class municipality in the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. It is approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi) east of the capital city of Cagayan de Oro. It borders on the municipalities of Villanueva, Claveria and Balingasag, while Macajalar Bay is to the west. Jasaan is politically subdivided into 15 barangays, of which 8 are coastal barangays (Aplaya, Solana, Luz Banzon, Kimaya, Lower Jasaan, Bobontugan, Jampason and San Antonio) and 7 inland barangays (Upper Jasaan, Corrales, San Isidro, Natubo, Danao, San Nicolas, and I.S. Cruz).
HISTORY OF THE MUNICIPALITY
he history of the Municipality of Jasaan, just like other municipalities of Misamis Oriental, can be traced back from the pre-Spanish era. Jasaan, as early as l840, was already an existing municipality. It was reduced to a barangay in the year 1903 and was placed under the jurisdiction of Balingasag with the occupation of the Americans who governed the country after the Spaniards. Jasaan was named by a Spanish missionary who chanced upon a native sharpening his bolo in Sapong Spring in what is now called Kota, Aplaya. The missionary asked for the name of the place, however, the native replied “Ag-hasaa” meaning, “I am sharpening my bolo”. The missionary, thought that he was answered correctly, called the place “Ag-hasaa”, but finding it difficult for him to pronounce the word, he called it “Hasaan” instead. Then it was changed to “Jasaan”. Hasaanons were challenged to work for the restoration of their municipal status. Thus, the Municipality, by virtue of Executive Order No. l65, issued by President Elpidio Quirino, regained its municipal status effective Sept. 1, 1948. On November l0, l948, a formal inauguration took place and the first set of appointed municipal officials assumed office. From a sleepy and sparsely populated community, Jasaan grew and developed into one of the agro-industrial municipalities of Misamis Oriental.
can anybody from jasaan make a research and establish a more decent history of the place? small details could help provide the needed materials in order to come up with a more concrete history i.e. 1.) name of that Spanish missionary who gave that name of the place (if the present history of the town is the real macoy, the name of that spanish missionary may still be traced; 2.) reconcile daanglungsod-aplaya-jasaan (if aplaya is originally daanglungsod and it is where the alleged spanish missionary had chanced upon a native, then, what is the old name of the present-day jasaan?
there are names that should be included, those who were part and parcel instruments in the shaping up of the place, like the use of Purok 1,2,3,4,5 and so on and so forth with their corresponding names as siga-siga, sidlakan, riverside etc. (this is the work of Fr. Ireneo Amantillo, CSsR in 1967 or 1969, who after sometime was installed bishop of Tandag.). . . the founding fathers of the place, teniente del barrio, the mayors (with the names of these leaders in chronological order, jasaan can trace its roots - with pride. and, jasaan should not be contented of QUE SITIO and AG-HASAA as its origin. because, jasaan or HASAAN is a HONING/SHARPENING PLACE OF SKILLS AND TALENTS. gone are the days of jasaan musicians and Ramon Icayan Cabello , the incomparable sculptor in that part of the earth.
thank you.
